Can you ski in Sicily?

“Can you ski in Sicily?”
This is the question we hear from our guests every time we talk about the winter appearance of Etna.
Yes, despite the latitudes, on the volcano, it is possible to find purely Alpine views and all the characteristics of the great mountains in winter. Consequently, it is possible to make a real “switch” to start with winter sports and activities, sometimes even for more than 5 months a year.
Snowfall is often subject to weather conditions that are distorted by the orography of the volcanic massif and the presence of the sea at close range that characterizes every aspect. Without forgetting the possible eruptive activity that, with the emissions of ash and scoria, can affect the ski season and modify the white appearance of the volcano. A sort of “volcanic stracciatella”, also unique in its kind!

There are two ski areas on the volcano, respectively in Etna Sud (Nicolosi) and Etna Nord (Piano Provenzana). Although both were operational in the past, in recent years, enthusiasts have concentrated on the northern side of the volcano thanks to snow that resists high temperatures for various factors.
An ever-increasing number of users continue the practice of ski-alp (ski mountaineering) and telemark, a true discipline for a few connoisseurs and the sides of the Sicilian volcano seem to be the ideal setting for a memorable day.

Winter excursions

Trekking excursions, which usually continue until the months of November/December, are replaced by beautiful walks with snowshoes. Among woods, lava flows and ancient and recent craters, a continuous surprise to discover unique scenarios and contrasts that only Etna in winter can offer.

Our snow tours, always in search of the true essence of Etna, give everyone the chance to spend moments that will hardly be forgotten.
Try it and believe it, RedEtna says!

We almost forgot, YES, you can ski in Sicily!
