Etna Eruption 2022/2023

The eruption of Etna began almost quietly during the late afternoon of November 27, 2022 (photo 1), without the spectacular demonstrations we witnessed in 2021 with the countless paroxysms of the Southeast Crater. High lava fountains and flows on the sides characterized an entire season, giving the many tourists and enthusiasts a unique show in the world.

The new eruptive fracture on the side of the Southeast Crater gave rise to a flow that first created a vast lava field, with the numerous arms “forced” to travel also inside the flows already established and in the cooling phase. Numerous overlaps with the formation of a hornito exactly in the place of the main vent (photo 4). The position of the same is not the best due to the instability of the side of the Southeast Crater and the roughness of the surrounding terrain. However, it was and is possible to admire the phenomenon from a safe distance with our dedicated tours.

Thousands of volcano enthusiasts have visited the new eruption from all possible altitudes and at any time, so as not to miss even a minute of the surprising evolution of Etna.
During the last week, a sort of pause has been witnessed by the volcano, with the emission that initially slowed down to almost stopping, and then restarted with vigor. To keep the red of the lava company, now, there is also the snow of Etna. This year it arrived a little late compared to last season.

The scenario that presents itself when the elements of nature merge is surprising. Even more so during the nights with the presence of the moon that, taking advantage of the white mantle of Etna, illuminates the Sicilian volcano making it even more majestic. An even clearer vision during the cold evenings of January and February, when the air so clean, allows you to see unique details!
