The biggest secondary crater of Etna (video)

Monte Frumento delle Concazze is the largest secondary extinct crater of Mount Etna. This crater erupted a long, long time ago. At the end of the eruption, the lava receded to the bottom of the crater, starting the cooling process.

As it cooled, it formed a sort of plug, sealing the crater permanently. In 1865, Mount Etna attempted to erupt again from this area, possibly trying to break through the plug. This attempt caused tremors and earthquakes in the surrounding region. The pressure found a way out through the softest part of the area, creating six craters in a row. These are known as the “buttonhole system craters,” resembling the buttons on a shirt.
