The “new” Pit Crater of Etna

The constant evolution of Etna has always modified the summit area, sometimes distorting it and retracing scenarios already seen in the recent past.
On the summit of the Sicilian volcano, history often repeats itself despite the geological times that do not match those of human beings, a surprising story that never ceases to amaze scholars and enthusiasts.
In recent weeks, we have witnessed the formation of a new “pit crater”, a well/sinking crater inside the Bocca Nuova Crater, one of the continuously changing summit apparatuses that already hosts two small cones inside the crater depression.

Subsequently, numerous rings of gas were noticed coming from this “new” crater, a particular and fascinating phenomenon that usually heralds the rise of new magma and therefore of a new eruption.

During one of the many helicopter overflights carried out by our team, it was possible to understand the exact position of the new pit crater with respect to its “big brothers” who, slyly and with ups and downs, continue their work of degassing while waiting for a new scenario that, we are sure, will not be long in coming!
